
Sometimes a paintbrush and an airbrush are more than a small detail touch-up job actually needs. Why “acrylic” specifically, and not just “paint marker”
This is the single most important distinction and the one worth getting right before buying anything. Paint markers come in genuinely different ink chemistries, and only one of them is safe to use on PLA or PETG without risk. It is the correct and only category of marker to reach for on an FDM print.
Alcohol-based and solvent-based markers — the kind sold as permanent markers, some craft “paint pens,” and anything listing alcohol or a solvent carrier in its ink — are a genuine risk to PLA and PETG specifically. Opacity varies meaningfully between colours within the same marker range, which is worth knowing before assuming every colour in a set will behave identically. Lighter and pastel shades, and white in particular, are consistently the colours that struggle most for genuine opacity in a single pass — getting a properly solid white over a dark base colour typically needs two or three layered passes rather than one, regardless of brand. Darker, more saturated colours tend to cover in a single confident pass. Fast, tack-free drying matters more for 3D prints than it does for paper or canvas work, because a print’s surface has genuine three-dimensional relief — raised detail, recessed panel lines, curved surfaces — and a slow-drying ink is more likely to smudge as you turn the piece to work on an adjacent area. Acrylic marker ink generally dries tack-free within a minute or so, which is fast enough to keep working around a small model without constant waiting.
Established brands worth buying
Posca, made by Uni, is the brand that comes up most consistently across art and craft communities generally, not just in 3D printing specifically, and it has earned that reputation over decades rather than through recent marketing. The paint is genuinely opaque water-based acrylic, available across a wide range of tip sizes from extra-fine 0.7mm up through broad chisel tips well over 8mm, and the pigment quality is consistently good — though even Posca’s own more experienced users note that some individual colours in the range are noticeably less opaque than others, which is the same opacity caveat covered above rather than a brand-specific weakness. Posca pens use a spring-loaded tip that needs shaking and priming (capped, shake firmly, then press the tip on scrap paper until ink flows) before first use and periodically afterward — a normal part of using this pen type rather than a fault.
Molotow’s ONE4ALL range is the other name worth knowing, originally developed for graffiti and street art applications where genuine opacity, UV resistance, and durability on outdoor surfaces all matter considerably more than they do for indoor craft paper. That heritage translates well to 3D prints specifically — a marker built to survive UV exposure and weather on a wall is comfortably durable enough for a model that lives on a shelf, and the acrylic ink is compatible with the same plastic surfaces PLA and PETG present.

Beyond these three, the market is genuinely flooded with large multi-colour marker sets from lesser-known brands, frequently sold in sets of 24, 36, or even over 100 colours at aggressive prices. Some of these are genuinely fine for casual use — the underlying acrylic ink chemistry is not exotic or hard to manufacture correctly. What this is actually good for
Fine detail work on miniatures and figurines — eyes, small text, thin trim lines — where a brush would be slower and harder to control consistently. Quick touch-ups on a print that is mostly finished but has a small flaw or a spot that needs a different colour. Labelling or marking functional prints. And genuinely full colouring of small, simple models where the surface area is modest enough that a marker’s broader tip covers it efficiently without needing an airbrush or a full paint session. Ventilation and safety, still worth a mention
Water-based acrylic markers are considerably lower-risk than the spray primers and lacquers covered in the painting guide — there is no aerosol involved and the solvent content, where any exists, is minimal compared to a spray can. Normal room ventilation is entirely adequate for marker work, and this is genuinely one of the more low-fuss, low-risk finishing methods covered on this site.
